Third Victim Killed in UNLV Shooting Identified

Dr. Naoko Takemaru, 69, was an Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at UNLV.

According to the Clark County Coroner’s Office, the third victim in Wednesday’s shooting at UNLV has been identified as Naoko Takemaru, 69, an Associate Professor of Japanese Studies in the Department of World Languages and Cultures of the College of Liberal Arts. According to UNLV's faculty page, her office is located on the third floor of the Beam Hall at the Lee Business School, where the incident happened.

Dr. Takemaru oversaw the entire Japanese Studies Program and taught upper-division courses on Japanese language, culture, and business. She was a recipient of the William Morris Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Liberal Arts in 2013.

The other two victims were also UNLV faculty members - Patricia Navarro-Velez, 39, and Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64.
